How to Choose the Right Trucking Company

With thousands of carriers operating across the United States, choosing the right trucking company to work with is one of the most important career decisions a driver makes. Pay matters, but it's only one piece of a much larger picture. Here's how to evaluate a carrier properly before you sign anything.

Start with the carrier's safety record. The FMCSA's Safety Measurement System (SMS) publishes carrier safety data publicly at ai.fmcsa.dot.gov. Look at their Unsafe Driving, Hours-of-Service Compliance, and Vehicle Maintenance BASIC scores. A company with poor safety scores may pressure drivers to cut corners — which puts your CDL and your life at risk.

Understand the actual compensation structure, not just the advertised CPM (cents per mile). Ask specifically: how are miles calculated (hub miles vs. practical vs. shortest)? Are there accessorial pay items for detention, layover, and loading/unloading? What does the average driver actually gross per week? Get real numbers from real drivers, not just recruiting materials.

Home time is non-negotiable for many drivers. Ask recruiters specifically how many nights per week drivers spend at home on the routes you'd be running, not the average across all routes. Talk to current drivers on those lanes. There's a significant difference between 'home weekly' and 'home every weekend starting Saturday night.'

Finally, evaluate the equipment. Newer trucks mean fewer breakdowns, better fuel economy, and a more comfortable working environment. Ask about the average age of the fleet, the maintenance program, and how quickly broken-down trucks are repaired. Being stuck on the side of the road waiting 12 hours for a service call costs you money and is deeply demoralizing.
