Your CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) score is one of the most important numbers in your trucking career. It affects which carriers will hire you, which shippers will accept you, and how closely enforcement agencies scrutinize your operation. Understanding how it works — and how to protect it — is essential knowledge.
The CSA system tracks violations across seven BASICs: Unsafe Driving, Hours-of-Service Compliance, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances/Alcohol, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazardous Materials Compliance, and Crash Indicator. Each violation is assigned a severity weight, and more recent violations count more than older ones. Violations drop off after 24 months.
The single most impactful thing you can do is ace roadside inspections. Before any inspection, make sure your logs are current and accurate, all required documents are in the cab and accessible, all lights are working, and there are no obvious equipment violations. Level 1 inspections (the most comprehensive) are thorough — be ready.
If you receive a violation you believe is incorrect, fight it. The DataQ system at FMCSA allows carriers and drivers to challenge inspection report data. A successful DataQ challenge removes or amends the violation and directly improves your score. Many drivers don't realize this option exists or don't bother — which is a mistake when your livelihood is at stake.
Build pre-trip inspection into your daily routine non-negotiably. The most common CSA violations — brake issues, lighting defects, and tire problems — are all detectable on a thorough pre-trip. A brake adjustment violation carries one of the highest severity weights in the system. There is simply no good reason to accumulate preventable maintenance violations.
